Whimsical swing music with slightly spooky undertones.
For Breakout Brew's soundtrack, I was asked to make swing music, a genre I had never even tried to make before. I had trouble nailing something down for the game for a while, but eventually I landed on something. Swing was daunting for me because, as far as I know, it works best with real instrumentation, something that I am not experienced with at all. But by laying down a very basic framework with pianos, organs, and softer drums than what I'm used to using, I had a lot of freedom to go crazy with synths to really bring out the witchy aspects of the game's theme into the soundtrack.
BREAK A LEG!
Most of my time spent working on the soundtrack for this game was spent on this song, which went through a lot of trial and error. By playing with reverb, I bring the song from just percussion to a full set of instruments. An offbeat piano ties together all of the pieces of this musical puzzle to form a swing-like song. From there, it moves into a breakdown section that with some spooky synthetic melodies.
LET'S GET HEXIN'
Once I had nailed down the style I was going for, I created a very catchy and bold melody that only gets bolder when played by an organ. The bassline underneath sounds very springy and elastic, complimenting the jumping and platforming one does in this game. This song ended up being used for the trailer since the intro sounds really sneaky, which reflects the premise of the game very well.
