ABOUT THE GAME
Making diverse songs that all fit in the same world.
Frog Snatchers has a wide array of not only frogs for the player to collect but also characters to meet and environments to explore. Because of this, I was tasked with making a variety of songs to bring all of these different areas and enemies to life. Each track has its own identity rooted in its location in the game's world and narrative.
That being said, the similar theme that I wanted to maintain throughout them all is this certain level of whimsy to fit the humorous and silly tone of the game. None of the songs take themselves too seriously, not even the theme song of the game's devil.
SEWER WORLD THEME
Because the sewer is the first area the player drops into, I made the song feel expansive and mysterious to hint at the greater world beyond. In the build, the rhythmic drums don't come in until the player completes the tutorial. This separation makes the completion of said tutorial feel even more rewarding to the player.
SEWER SHOP THEME
The shop in the sewer was described to me as being super dingy and being run by a pretty scummy guy, so I made the song feel very roughly put together. The melody of the slap bass is simple, but due to how it contrasts with the rest of the song, it becomes the focal point of the song and gives off that skeevy vibe.
SLIMEBOT BOSS THEME
TOXIC TO THE TOUCH
Since the Slimebot is the player's first real combat challenge, the music had to fit this same intensity. By using an amen break and resampling it, the fast-paced rhythm accents the high-stakes combat. The synths also have a slight playfulness and vastness to them to keep in line with the fact that this is the first boss of many to come.
CITY WORLD THEME
I DREAM OF LIGHTS
While concepting this song, I took a nap to clear my head and I had a dream where this melody was playing - hence the title of the song. With a very pronounced bassline and dance-like rhythm coupled with the chiptune synth that comes in halfway through, this song is the perfect fit for a city made completely out of neon.
CITY CLUB THEME
AWKWARD DANCING (BECAUSE I HAVE FINS)
While "DJ Glubstep" and his club seem to be far removed from the mafia lurking in the city, the club is actually a common hang-out spot for these goons. This is why the simple beat and steady rhythm are met with somewhat off-putting melodies, with an underwater feel for DJ Glubstep.
CAPRAVOLA BOSS THEME
Making the theme song for the devil, who also runs the city's mafia, in a cute and funny game was difficult, but possible. The intro uses detuned synths and a low choir chant to set up the evil mood of Capravola. Then, the fast-paced drums kick in to give urgency, along with the low choir and a new distorted bassline to keep the theme.
FLORIDA WORLD THEME
Inspired by music from Donkey Kong Country and Banjo Kazooie, I wanted this song to omit the difficulty of the Florida world and rather focus on the humor of it with more playful melodies. Additionally, the beach/tropical theme is present through the focus on percussion and rhythm along with the marimba as the main lead.
FLORIDA MAN BOSS THEME
BEST SERVED COLD
Florida Man lives inside of an overturned ice cream truck, and I thought that perfectly encapsulates his crazed state of mind. By sampling the classic ice cream truck song in the intro and then resampling it and pitch-bending it later on, I maintain the same audible theme while touching on the craziness with the busy percussion.
