365 Days of Hearthstone | Week 16 Roundup

Updated: Jun 1, 2019

Same drill as always: post the card, talk about my thought process, and look at any feedback I received from my posts on r/CustomHearthstone. Oh, and if you would like to join in on the fun of this challenge or even just want to draw inspiration from our daily themes as they are happening, hop in our Discord server!

Now without further ado, let's take a look at my cards for this week!

Day 104 | For the Greater Good

Artwork found by Wes #15

Why not go all the way and do it for the greatest good?

Creation

I had trouble coming up with something for this card initially, but I think I made something that I am happy with. I drew inspiration from how white the animal was and how it seems to be dying and ascending with the wings, in a way becoming an angel. Because of that, I tried to make something to support res Priest without being super boring and... well, essentially make something that isn't just more resurrection effects. Anyways, voluntarily destroying your own minion is super weak, but with a proper deck, there might be minions you actually want to destroy yourself!

Feedback

People really liked the card! The two biggest pieces of feedback was the synergy it has with Recurring Villain, which is definitely a problem but I think a 7 mana play to do nothing might be too much of a tempo loss to warrant running it especially when it loses to silence effects, and that it feels like more of a Druid card, which I think is fair but I like it thematically and functionally in Priest!

Day 105 | Shroomancy

A card for the Kobolds and Catacombs expansion

Fungalmancer would like to have a word with you.

Creation

One of the most influential cards from Kobolds and Catacombs is without a doubt Fungalmancer. The ability to get a net gain of 12 stats for 5 mana with 8 of those stats being immediate AND being split among multiple bodies made it an almost auto-include in any sort of aggressive deck. So what if Fungalmancer decided to teach his methods to one of the classes? Inspired in part by Dinomancy, Shroomancy gets a smaller version of the Fungalmancer ability that's much more in line with the effects of Dinomancy but allows you to recast it for the rest of the game. This on top of Druid's ability to summon a lot of token minions quickly and Shroomancy might actually find a home in a token deck!

Feedback

People liked the card a lot! It might be too strong in the current Token Druid decks, but even still people said that this card is balanced by itself.

Day 106 | Lurking Mossbrood

An Elemental

"From the moss I wait..."

Creation

Because of how open-ended today's theme was, I decided to gain inspiration from Google. Usually you can find an "elemental" picture of any sort of physical material, so I looked up "moss", "mold", and "jungle" until I found this. From there, I thought that having this creepy looking mossy guy be related to Secrets, specifically for Hunter because of the jungle theme. I came up with the idea of having an effect that interacted with a Secret that is already in play, but originally this card was a 5-mana 3/5. After some conversation with friends, I settled on this statline since the resummoning effect is super inconsistent and a card like Ursatron already has a pretty good statline despite drawing a card!

Feedback

There was little to no feedback on this card. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Day 107 | Baretooth Bow

A card that interacts with Hunter's Hero Power effect

Always think twice before adding too many spikes to your bow.

Creation

I genuinely don't like the face Hunter archetype, but I for some reason can't resist trying to make cards that would fit into the deck. This time, I made Baretooth Bow, which allows for Hunter to get a lot of face damage in for one card at a pretty big downside. Not being able to draw cards essentially means that the aggressive decks will be running out of steam very quickly after playing this, so using this on turn 2 probably isn't the best idea. But once the hunter has some minions on board, this is a nice finisher to be able to close out games!

Feedback

There was little to no feedback on this card. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Day 108 | Silverwind Vanguard

Artwork found by Joe #8

This baby can go 0 to 3000 in seconds!

Creation

We all know the big dragon statline: 9 Mana, 4 Attack, 12 Health. In the past, this statline would usually be given to legendary minions, like Ysera or Malygos, but recently we have a simple common dragon by the name of Sleepy Dragon. With the recent addition of the Whirlwind Tempest card to give Windfury minions more support, I figured why not make a big dragon with Windfury? And well, that's it! It seems like it could be printed, but probably wouldn't be anything too powerful.

Feedback

There was little to no feedback on this card. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Day 109 | Oldport Negotiator

A Pirate

"Hand over yer coin and I'll play nice."

Creation

I wanted to make some sort of trade/negotiation oriented pirate in terms of the theme for this card. My initial thought was to give your opponent a weapon you had equipped and then gain extra stats because of it. I went looking for art, and then I stumbled across this amazing piece. Immediately, I abandoned my initial idea while still maintaining the theme and created Oldport Negotiator. When your opponent doesn't have a coin, it's a simple 3 mana 3/4, which is the expected statline for its cost. But if your opponent does have a coin, it loses enough stats to essentially become a 2 mana minion with the benefit of actually stealing the opponent's coin! Because this would only happen in around 50% of matches, I don't think this would be too powerful to be included in many decks, but it could create some interesting matches in Arena. And who knows, maybe you want to combo this with Soldier of Fortune or even (eh... probably not) Booty Bay Bookie!

Feedback

A ton of people thought the idea and the balance of the card were super nice. In both situations, the card is fine to play, and the flavor of the card really wraps the whole thing together!

Day 110 | Rooted Crystal

Artwork found by Leo #6

It should really have a "Handle With Care" sticker on it.

Creation

The obvious route to go for this artwork was for it to interact with Mana Crystals, so I did exactly that! Initially, I had an idea for it to be a Choose One card with either the deathrattle of gaining a Mana Crystal, a classic Druid effect, or adding a random Druid card to your hand, similarly to Shimmerfly in Hunter. But, then I had a more interesting idea of making a Choose One (Secretly) card, like Fatespinner! Both effects deal with Mana Crystals, but it either ramps both players or delays both players by essentially one turn!

Feedback

There was little to no feedback on this card. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Sadly, because the amount of work my friends and I are doing for school, many of them are unable to create cards daily and I am unable to follow which ones are being made from them. Because of this, I will no longer be highlighting the cards they are making every week. But either way, I definitely think you should know who I am doing this challenge with: Josh Grazda, Dakota Williams, Joe Siehl, and Wes Weitzman.

And that's all for this week; I'll see you all in 7 days!
