365 Days of Hearthstone | Week 28 Roundup

Same drill as always: post the card, talk about my thought process, and look at any feedback I received from my posts on r/CustomHearthstone. Oh, and if you would like to join in on the fun of this challenge or even just want to draw inspiration from our daily themes as they are happening, hop in our Discord server!

Now without further ado, let's take a look at my cards for this week!

Day 188 | Jungle Birdwatcher

A card that interacts with Beasts

There's no rush greater than spotting a player actually running Captain's Parrot.

Creation

I don't know why, but Untamed Beastmaster has always stood out to me. I really wish I knew why I liked that card so much, but I don't. For today's theme, I made something inspired by that card, but it triggers off of your opponent's deck. Originally I planned for this to just be pack-filler and to not have the "gain +1/+1" effect, but even with that effect the card isn't particularly strong. Because of that, the card is no longer pack-filler and is more of a tech card! Also, the card would probably be a pretty nice inclusion in any arena deck with its premium statline and ability to see your opponent's cards.

Feedback

There was little to no feedback on this card. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Day 189 | Nature Study

An Epic card for Druid

Wild Growth - normal brain. Nature Study - galaxy brain.

Creation

Nature Study is based off of Wild Growth, which should be fairly obvious. The only difference is the lowered Mana cost for what seems to be triple the effect. The huge downside to this card is that you're not actually getting any value immediately, and and upside you do get is delayed at a point that you can't control. Originally this was costed at 2-mana, but I decided against it due to the tempo you would lose when doing so. Also, I'm not entirely sure if this would actually give you Excess Mana or not when you're at 10-mana. If it is the case, then maybe this should be worth 2-mana, but if not, then 1-mana is certainly fine.

Feedback

There was little to no feedback on this card. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Day 190 | Totemic Callforth

A 2-Mana card for Shaman

Shamans are now offering a "Buy 1, Get 1 Card Free!" deal with Totems.

Creation

Shiv, Flare, Rocket Boots, and Elementary Reaction... what do these all have in common? That's right, they're all 2-mana card-draw spells with additional effects! These effects are usually really small, since drawing a card is already valued somewhere between 1 and 2-mana, which makes these cards one of the simplest examples of bundled effects on one card. Using this idea, I thought joining together drawing a card and what is essentially Shaman's basic Hero Power would make for another nice addition to these types of cards!

Feedback

There was little to no feedback on this card. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Day 191 | Bogfin Hunter

A Murloc

Even the sneakiest of murlocs can't stay hidden for too long.

Creation

Swamp King Dred is a card that is cool in theory, but just didn't work out in its execution. Being more of a control-tool fit into a class that has struggled with control decks already makes it a bit of a misfit, but its effect is essentially giving enemy minions Rush for the next turn in exchange for a slightly bigger body. Not only that, but the card can be targeted by removal spells and effects, making it a loss in tempo rather than a gain. In an attempt to salvage the idea of the card's mechanic, I created Bogfin Hunter! Being a smaller minion means that there is less of a chance of losing tempo, and giving it Stealth also gives it a much higher chance of actually doing what it needs to. But still, the effect can be easily played around, since when you think about it, its like playing a Snipe but you reveal the card instead of it being hidden!

Feedback

There was little to no feedback on this card. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Day 192 | Greed Is Good

A Secret for Rogue

Trade Prince Gallywix has been trying to remove the 10-card hand limit for so long.

Creation

Mill decks have always been one of my personal favorite archetypes, but they've never been too strong other than the occasional low-rank laddering. This is an attempt at making mill decks have really powerful turns, where once the opponent's hand is full of useless cards, it becomes much easier to mill their cards from their deck!

Feedback

While the theme of the card was liked, some people thought that the card was far too strong and too punishing. Because of this, one user suggested lowering the amount of Gluttonous Wastes given to the opponent to 3 while also lowering the trigger to 1 extra card as opposed to 2. This results in a more balanced yet still powerful Secret!

Day 193 | Highpeak Matriarch

A Dragon

She may not be very big, but she will make you feel so small.

Creation

Dragon Paladin hasn't seen the light of day in such a long time... Back when Blackrock Mountain was released, Dragon Consort was the only reason to play Dragon Paladin since you could play big dragons earlier than normal. But since then, Dragon Paladin always seems to fall flat. Because of this, I thought of making an extremely strong tool for that archetype, since it does need the boost to be viable. Highpeak Matriarch allows for players to deal with early-game snowballing or with large late-game threats so long as you are holding a Dragon! This way, Dragon Paladin has more survivability against multiple decks.

Feedback

There was little to no feedback on this card. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Day 194 | Coliseum King Ogvar

Artwork found by Josh #4

No one man has ever bested him in battle... keyword 'one'.

Creation

When I saw this artwork, it seemed like the central figure of the artwork was not really in an expressive enough position to be a minion, and the weapon he was holding did not seem special enough to make into a weapon. Because of this, I thought it would be a perfect fit for a Hero card! My idea for this hero card was to make something that focused entirely on 1on1 combat, where the hero could theoretically take on any single minion your opponent throws at you. This idea is seen best in the Hero Power, where your hero becomes Immune if your opponent only has 1 minion on the battlefield. Your Battlecry also interacts with this, where you destroy every single minion on the board except for one of your opponent's minion. This Battlecry reminded me a lot of Brawl, and because of that, I figured that putting this at 5-mana would fit well!

Feedback

There was little to no feedback on this card. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Sadly, because the amount of work my friends and I are doing for school, many of them are unable to create cards daily and I am unable to follow which ones are being made from them. Because of this, I will no longer be highlighting the cards they are making every week. But either way, I definitely think you should know who I am doing this challenge with: Josh Grazda, Dakota Williams, Joe Siehl, and Wes Weitzman.

And that's all for this week; I'll see you all in 7 days!
