365 Days of Hearthstone | Week 31 Roundup

As you might have noticed, this post was 1 day late, and that's because I recently partook in the Game Maker's Toolkit Game Jam 2019! Because of the time and effort invested, I did not have time to make the blogpost like I usually do on Sundays, so hopefully you understand! Oh, and if you want to check out the game I made, do so right here.

Same drill as always: post the card, talk about my thought process, and look at any feedback I received from my posts on r/CustomHearthstone. Oh, and if you would like to join in on the fun of this challenge or even just want to draw inspiration from our daily themes as they are happening, hop in our Discord server!

Now without further ado, let's take a look at my cards for this week!

Day 209 | Frostbite Summoner

A card that interacts with Elementals

"It's too cold? I say it's not cold enough!"

Creation

I don't care how many people tell me that Freeze Shaman will never be good, I will still try to push it in some way. With this card, even if it doesn't find a home in Freeze Shaman, it could potentially find a home in some sort of combo deck with Grumble, World Shaker, which I think is great since it allows for multiple different playstyles. Another deck that could make use of this is an Elemental deck to try to get a large board-dump with Taunts that balance out the downside of Freezing your minions. And lastly, I was fairly generous with the minion's stats to enable people to play the card on its own without a followup, since otherwise the card seems like dead weight in your hand sometimes.

Feedback

There was little to no feedback on this card. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Day 210 | Deepbrush Elder

Artwork found by Joe #15

In the deepest parts of this jungle are glimpses of your own past.

Creation

When I saw this artwork, the creature looked very wise and old to me, which made me think of it as some sort of respected elder creature. And would an elder creature not remember cards that you have played in the past? Using this theme, I came up with a relatively simple card that has some pretty deep implications, especially in some sort of combo deck, most notably paired with a Mind Blast Priest burn deck.

Feedback

There was little to no feedback on this card. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Day 211 | Withered Lackey

Artwork found by Wes #14

The lonely dying creatures in the tombs of Uldum see the League of EVIL as one big friend group.

Creation

I've refrained from making any Lackey cards up until now, but after seeing the new Titanic Lackey I felt inspired to try to make something that could fit the power level of a Lackey. Thematically, I've always loved the idea of Corruption, but the card is never strong enough to actually include in any deck. I figured the best way to get that effect to see any play is by having it appear as a Lackey! It is powerful in the right circumstances, like trying to remove a minion behind a Taunt!

Feedback

There was little to no feedback on this card. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Day 212 | Crystalcore Worm

A card for the Blackrock Mountain expansion

Early dragon gets the worm.

Creation

The biggest defining mechanic from the Blackrock Mountain expansion was Dragons, and with the introduction of the "If you're holding a Dragon" mechanic, it didn't feel right to make anything that didn't interact with Dragons for today's theme. The idea I had from the beginning was to do something that interacted with having a Dragon in your hand but didn't use the simple phrase that I previously mentioned. Eventually, I landed on this idea of having something spawn if the cards next to it in your hand were Dragons. The first iteration of this card had it instantly summon when the condition was met, but it proved to be too strong to have the card automatically spawn right after the Mulligan phase. To fix this without really getting rid of the idea of the card, I just had it change its cost to (0), allowing you to play it on your turn rather than as soon as the game starts.

Feedback

People liked the unique spin on the Dragon-holding mechanic, but some people thought the design of the card was too much. It was argued that playing this minion for 0-mana on turn 1 was way too good, but seeing as how Dragon decks aren't aggro-focused and because of how inconsistent the condition is, it seems fine to me. It was also proposed to make the minion a higher cost since there isn't a lot of reason to include this card, but that would make the polarizing effect of the card way too off-kilter in both directions.

Day 213 | Travelling Cottage

Artwork found by Leo #13

Come in! Stay a whi- oh, whoops, the turtle stepped on them.

Creation

The house on the back of the turtle made me think of a nice little cottage to live in, very welcoming like the Inn of Hearthstone. Because of this, I thought that I could embody the cozy feeling of the cottage through an effect that buffs the health of other minions! I figured that a good cottage would be open to provide business to anyone, so I had the effect influence every minion rather than just your own. Because of the symmetrical effect, being a little bit more generous than vanilla stats is reasonable, since the opponent could really benefit from the effect!

Feedback

There was little to no feedback on this card. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Day 214 | Mimic's Curse

Artwork found by Joe #12

Turns out you don't even know if your own cards are your own cards.

Creation

The is obviously a mimic, and it's pretty obvious what role a mimic has in fantasy; you don't know it's a bad monster until you open the chest. Similarly, I designed a card that revolves around the idea of not knowing you're using a mimic until you play it! And seeing as how we already have a Toothy Chest in the game, it would be nice to tie that into the card. This card allows for the enemy to get some sort of idea of what could be a mimic; because it's a copy of a card in their hand, they can guess if it'll be a mimic. And if a Legendary gets shuffled into their deck, then they know it's a mimic since it's the only copy in their deck!

Feedback

There was little to no feedback on this card. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Day 215 | Generous Preacher

A card that interacts with Priest's Hero Power effect

"The light shines on all, even yourself!"

Creation

In support of the new Activate the Obelisk Priest Quest, I thought I could make a relatively simple card that allows for Priest to heal minions while also restoring health to their own face. This way, they can have more sustain on their own hero rather than just on minions, all while getting even closer to completing the quest! This card also works with cards like Circle of Healing, which can result in some pretty huge burst recovery for Priest.

Feedback

There was little to no feedback on this card. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Sadly, because the amount of work my friends and I are doing for school, many of them are unable to create cards daily and I am unable to follow which ones are being made from them. Because of this, I will no longer be highlighting the cards they are making every week. But either way, I definitely think you should know who I am doing this challenge with: Josh Grazda, Dakota Williams, Joe Siehl, and Wes Weitzman.

And that's all for this week; I'll see you all in 7 days!
