365 Days of Hearthstone | Week 32 Roundup

Same drill as always: post the card, talk about my thought process, and look at any feedback I received from my posts on r/CustomHearthstone. Oh, and if you would like to join in on the fun of this challenge or even just want to draw inspiration from our daily themes as they are happening, hop in our Discord server!

Now without further ado, let's take a look at my cards for this week!

Day 216 | Relic Swap

A Secret for Hunter

Brann has been around these tombs one too many times now.

Seeing as how the League of Explorers are back, and how Brann is now a part of the Hunter identity, I thought to take inspiration from the famous Indiana Jones scene of him replacing an idol and make it into a card! There hasn't been any cards that incorporate the rarity of cards, and I think it would be pretty cool to see this actually come into the real game. Admittedly, this card might fit the Rogue theme more than the Hunter theme, but seeing as how I am in the middle of a Game Jam and hit probably around 2 hours of sleep in the last 2 days, I don't have the mental capacity to devote anymore to today's theme. If anyone was looking forward to me designing specifically a Hunter Secret for whatever reason, I'm sorry!

While the idea of the card was seen as sound, it was very common for people to think the card is far too weak. Notably, if your opponent plays a Battlecry minion with a small body, more often than not their minion will be transformed into something with a larger body after the Battlecry, which is just beneficial for your opponent. Because of this, I propose changing the card to be a bit stronger, where instead of changing it to a Common card of the same Cost, it changes to a Common card with a lower Cost, giving it much more room to screw over your opponent.

Day 217 | Leering Gargoyle

A card involving Inspire

It's hard to tell if it's made of stone since it's always sitting perfectly still.

Right as I posted this card, I was looking at a list of all the Inspire cards that were printed and I completely forgot that Argent Watchman existed. But when comparing it to this card, there are a lot of parallels. For one thing, they both have more stats than they should for their mana Cost, and for another, they both can't attack. The difference lies in their bulk and their other effect. Whereas Argent Watchman is a smaller minion overall that let's you choose where to attack when the Inspire goes off, this will attack a random enemy minion but it has a much bulkier body. Because of its bulk, the chance of this card sticking around after the effect goes off is pretty high, allowing you to get another use OR to heal it and get even more value from it! The healing synergy is notable, since in a Priest deck you could also use Silence effects on this!

People liked the idea of the card! The theme and how it ties to the mechanics is probably what people liked the most, as there were little comments about the balance of the card, but all in all it was a pretty good card.

Day 218 | Flash Freeze

A card for the Knights of the Frozen Throne expansion

Perfect for the summer weather.

I've had this card sitting on the back-burner for a while, and today is a perfect day to post it! Giving Freeze Shaman more support is something I love to do, and this card seems like it could help fit a pretty decent slot in that deck. Whether it's used to delay a wide enemy board OR to use in conjunction with Moorabi to generate some value, this card is in certain situations better than Frost Nova. Even if you're freezing 3 enemy minions, you're spending the mana next turn due to the Overload effect.

There was little to no feedback on this card. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Day 219 | Mainframe Behemoth

A 9-Mana card for Warrior

Best way to break into the mainframe? Use a giant, lumbering beast!

I think my favorite quest from the new expansion is Hack the System, and admittedly it's partially because it seems pretty underwhelming compared to all the other quests. I think the flavor of it is really funny, and I want to craft it and make a deck with it, but right now there doesn't seem to be a lot of support outside of Sul'thraze and other long-lasting weapons. Because of this, I took today's theme and made another reason to play Attack Warrior by playing giant discounted minions! Similar to Mulchmuncher, you could just play this for 9-mana and you'd be getting a fair minion, but at any discount it would be that much more value for what you're paying!

The idea of the card was well received and thought to be pretty well balanced! Because of how slow the cost-reduction effect is, the fact that it can become really cheap while also having Taunt as an effect was fine and would make a good fit in some Warrior decks.

Day 220 | Bloodwing Monarch

A 6-Mana card for Hunter

These insects actually have a really good sense of family.

With a lot of my recent designs for this challenge, I have tried to make synergies for archetypes and themes being pushed in the new expansion that I think need the extra little push. For today's theme, I decided to try to make a minion that helps push the new Quest Hunter deck and give more of a reason to play Unseal the Vault! With this card, you can play it as a turn finisher after having played several minion-summoning card to get one big rush minion to clean up any large threat on the board. Most notably, combining this card with Swarm of Locusts and Scarlet Webweaver can lead to some crazy swing turns!

There was little to no feedback on this card. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Day 221 | Dune Shifter

A 6-Mana card for Mage

Dune Shifters love gossip and will tend to show up when there are secrets.

Once again, I've decided to design a card that would fit in a Secret Mage deck in a way that isn't just purely tempo and Mana cheating effects. That being said, this card does run in the line of Mana cheating effects, but in a different vein than things like Kirin Tor Mage. Rather than just making the something reduce cost, instead this has an increase in stats with more secrets being played. In the past, cards like Medivh's Valet would have effects that would proc off of having 1 Secret, and having any more wouldn't really make much of a difference. This card on the other hand will keep spawning minions for each Secret you control, giving you a potentially huge swing in stats in one turn!

People loved this card! They thought it fit really well into the Secret Mage archetype that Blizzard just pushed in Saviors of Uldum in a way that gives that deck more reason to play it. Rather than having tempo-removal cards revolving around Secrets, like Medivh's Valet, this is purely a tempo-advantage card in the sense that you don't need to respond to your opponent's actions to play this optimally.

Day 222 | Contained Specimen

A 2-Mana card for Warrior

How difficult is it to just put a 'DO NOT OPEN' label on this thing?!?

On this episode of 'I Try To Enhance Dead Archetypes", I take a look at Taunt warrior, especially in conjunction with the new Taunt Warrior cards they just printed. After taking a look at Armagedillo and Into the Fray, it seems like the new direction for Taunt Warrior is through hand-buffs. Contained Specimen synergizes with this archetype since it heavily benefits from hand-buffs itself while also combo-ing nicely with other buffed cards in giving them Rush. If you play this on curve though, it allows you to catch up in any lost tempo by giving your next (probably 3-mana) card Rush!

There was little to no feedback on this card. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Sadly, because the amount of work my friends and I are doing for school, many of them are unable to create cards daily and I am unable to follow which ones are being made from them. Because of this, I will no longer be highlighting the cards they are making every week. But either way, I definitely think you should know who I am doing this challenge with: Josh Grazda, Dakota Williams, Joe Siehl, and Wes Weitzman.

And that's all for this week; I'll see you all in 7 days!
