365 Days of Hearthstone | Week 35 Roundup

Same drill as always: post the card, talk about my thought process, and look at any feedback I received from my posts on r/CustomHearthstone. Oh, and if you would like to join in on the fun of this challenge or even just want to draw inspiration from our daily themes as they are happening, hop in our Discord server!

Now without further ado, let's take a look at my cards for this week!

Day 237 | Lady Stridore

A card involving Silence

Lady Stridore always performs an encore, whether it's wanted or not.

Creation

I really buckled down to think of something interesting for today's theme because I love Silence as a concept (sometimes it can be super frustrating to play against though...). I played a ton of Silence Priest a while ago using Unsleeping Soul, but for whatever I really didn't want to make a card in that same vein. I instead thought of a more interesting way of a Silence tech card than Ironbeak Owl, so I thought of having the Silence effect be attached to the Deathrattle rather than the Battlecry. To make the card even more annoying, why not give it Taunt? AND Reborn? Because of how sticky and potentially annoying the card would be to play against, making it a Legendary to lock in only 1 copy in a deck seemed like the way to go.

Feedback

The only thing people were confused about was whether or not the Deathrattle triggers before or after the Reborn minion was summoned, but it was proven through Khartut Defender that the Deathrattle triggers before the Reborn minion is summoned. With this confusion being settled, people thought the card idea was neat and was an interesting use of the Reborn keyword!

Day 238 | Rooted Crumblefist

An 8-Mana Neutral card

Can it be considered an invasive weed if it's mainly made up of living rock?

Creation

I got the idea of combining card draw, a big Taunt minion, and Gang Up all together into one card, and honestly there's not much else to say about the inspiration for this card. In most cases outside of a fatigue matchup, the shuffling 3 copies of a card part of this is negligible, so you're essentially paying some stats for card draw and the off chance of generating a bit more value later on.

Feedback

This card was well received by the subreddit! It seemed like a card that could genuinely be printed in the game, but some people thought that control Warrior would make too much of a use of this card. The only way this card could be printed is to wait for when Warrior isn't in as strong of a spot as it is right now, but that could totally work out!

Day 239 | Forgotten Commander

A 6-Mana Neutral card

He tries to Charge, but that sword in his chest only lets him Rush.

Creation

As a kind of play on Warsong Commander, today I present to you Forgotten Commander. I tried to take the effect of Warsong Commander and use it in a more applicable way through, you guessed it, Rush! Oh, and also Reborn! Why? Well... because I wanted to! There's really no other reason to be quite honest. I like Reborn a lot as it turns out, and designing cards with that keyword is something I like to do!

Feedback

There was little to no feedback on this card. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Day 240 | Oathhammer

A 9-Mana card for Paladin

The truth is inside us all... and the easiest way to access it is with a giant hammer.

Creation

As most people know, 9-mana is probably the most awkward mana slot for a card in the game; at 10-mana, 8-mana cards let you use your hero power or a wide variety of cards and 10-mana cards are almost always your entire turn, but 9-mana cards leave you with 1 floating mana most of the time. That being said, I was having a hard time coming up with a card I liked at 9-mana, but then I decided to force myself into making a weapon. Seeing as how Silver Sword is one of the beefiest weapons that saw the most play, I modeled the power level of my card off of that. When comparing Silver Sword to Oathhammer, the former has a consistent trigger (attacking with the weapon in general) and an inconsistent payoff (the net buff depends on how many minions you have) while the latter has an inconsistent trigger (need to Overkill a minion when attacking) but a consistent payoff (will always result in a 5-mana discount). I think the open-endedness of this card and the flipside design when compared to Silver Sword is what makes it interesting to me!

Feedback

People really liked this card! They thought it had a very interesting design and was a worthy effect and statline for being the most expensive weapon in the game. It would also fit a very nice niche in the Duel Paladin deck that still hasn't been able to make massive waves due to how inconsistent it has been. Even outside of that archetype, the card would be able to promote a bunch of other Paladin archetypes outside of the aggro decks we've seen for a while.

Day 241 | Cull the Meek

A card involving adjacent minions

Always gotta' pick on the little guy, huh?

Creation

We have a lot of cards that do something to adjacent minions, like Defender of Argus and Cone of Cold, but as far as I'm aware there's not a whole lot of cards with effects that trigger based off of adjacent minions. Because of that, I challenged myself to make a card that fits that niche, and so I made Cull the Meek! This card serves as a 2-mana removal, which is insane, but at the restriction of having an adjacent minion that costs more. Because of that, the card becomes pretty inconsistent, and theoretically would only allow for you to remove a card that isn't the biggest threat on the board. That being said, with Magnetic minions and buffs, the biggest threat may very well be a 1-mana card, meaning this could get you some serious value!

Feedback

There was little to no feedback on this card. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Day 242 | Keepin' Lookout

A card involving Twinspell

Spells are good at keeping away scurvy!

Creation

After finding this art, I knew I had to make some look-out themed card for today's theme. Now yes, I am aware that Rogue is one of the EVIL classes and should not be receiving Twinspell, but I think Twinspell is not being given the attention it deserves because it was only given to 5 classes (same with schemes). All of the classes that have Twinspell are tied like so because of narrative restrictions, not because of a class identity restriction, which I think is fine to overlook when designing custom cards. Anyways, originally this card would look at the top 3 cards of your deck and then draw a card only if combo'd. After long discussion in our Discord server, I changed the design because it was seen as potentially too strong as a 1-mana draw 1 card effect (especially since you could draw 4 cards for 4 mana in total). Now you only get to draw if the three cards you see are spells, but the Twinspell keyword lets you be more lenient with playing the card, allowing you to see the cards that are coming up next regardless of what happens.

Feedback

There was little to no feedback on this card. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Day 243 | Witch's Brewmaster

A Common card for Shaman

"This brew brings forth the forest's brood..."

Creation

Seeing as how one of Shaman's core identities is with Battlecry minions, as shown through Shudderwock and Corrupt the Waters, I wanted to take advantage of the simplicity a Common card should have for today's theme. How simple can a Battlecry minion get? Well, how about a Battlecry that draws other Battlecries? Similar in power level to something like Witchwood Piper, this has a weaker stat distribution but can both be played earlier and has a different type of tutoring.

Feedback

There was little to no feedback on this card. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Sadly, because the amount of work my friends and I are doing for school, many of them are unable to create cards daily and I am unable to follow which ones are being made from them. Because of this, I will no longer be highlighting the cards they are making every week. But either way, I definitely think you should know who I am doing this challenge with: Josh Grazda, Dakota Williams, Joe Siehl, and Wes Weitzman.

And that's all for this week; I'll see you all in 7 days!
