365 Days of Hearthstone | Week 38 Roundup

Apologies for posting this 2 days late! I was at the Pokemon Go Safari Zone in Montreal on Sunday, meaning I had basically 0 time to post it on that day, and on the day after I was recovering from having walked over 15 miles on top of getting a pretty bad stomach ache. Don't worry, I'm fine now and for the most part I was fine during, but I thought I'd fill you in on why this post was late. I had a blast at the Safari Zone, but now let's talk about Hearthstone cards!

Same drill as always: post the card, talk about my thought process, and look at any feedback I received from my posts on r/CustomHearthstone. Oh, and if you would like to join in on the fun of this challenge or even just want to draw inspiration from our daily themes as they are happening, hop in our Discord server!

Now without further ado, let's take a look at my cards for this week!

Day 258 | Sethrak Breeder

Artwork found by Wes #1

How in the world did they manage to breed a baby Gahz'rilla...

Creation

I've been wanting to make a card that interacts with the neglected Discover options people don't pick for quite some time now, and I've finally drafted a concept that I really like! The first rendition of this I made would just summon one of the neglected options at random, but with the existence of big beasts like Gahz'rilla or even Violet Wurm, that seemed like it could highroll really badly. So instead, I had both of the neglected option be summoned but as small little 1/1s instead! This way, you can still get value through powerful Deathrattles like Arfus or Direhorn Hatchling without being able to steamroll the opponent through giant stats!

Feedback

People liked the idea of this card a lot! The only pieces of feedback were to maybe have it be a Hunter card or a Legendary card, but I think there's no real reason why another class can't use this card since other classes also use Beasts, and I don't think the effect is strong enough to necessitate it being a Legendary minion. Other than these things, people were completely behind the idea of the card!

Day 259 | Felscape Protector

A card involving Immune

He was actually shunned from the felscape for caring too much about others.

Creation

I've always wanted to include Pit Lord in a deck. I don't know why, but I just like the idea of a dude with big stats that smacks you in the face when you play him (I actually once drafted an Arena deck with 4 Pit Lords... oh yeah, it was also my first 0-3 Arena run). For today's theme, I wanted to make a card that made your hero Immune to allow for playing stuff like Pit Lord or Flame Imp, or even to use your Hero Power safely. Combining this idea with the trigger of drawing it like with Aranasi Broodmother, I came up with Felscape Protector! Originally it didn't have the Battlecry effect on top of it, but I figured that it might be a bit too inconsistent and weak in that state, especially because you would often Life Tap into the card. By adding the effect on a Battlecry, it allows for players to be more lenient with the card while still potentially making use of it in a Plot Twist deck!

Feedback

There was little to no feedback on this card. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Day 260 | Warbringer Trodin

A card involving Dormant

"War knows no end."

Creation

After watching Kibler's newest video where he played Quest Warrior, I was instantly inspired to make this card. After all, Hack the System is my favorite Quest from Saviors of Uldum! This card allows for near infinite value so long as you have the weapons to back it up. That being said, your opponent can always play around it by making sure they only have minions that won't die to your weapon. But THEN, you can just play cards like Upgrade! or Captain Greenskin to ensure that you get to bring back Trodin.

Feedback

People loved this card! They thought the balance of it was spot-on, and the way the card functions was a cool way to push the Quest Warrior deck in an interesting and good direction. People thought that playing this card would be a ton of fun and, without sounding like a broken record, loved the overall design of a card.

Day 261 | Powered Ancient

Artwork found by Joe #4

Oh man, this thing packs a real punch, trust me! Just, give me a second...

Creation

The robot thing in the artwork looked really old to me, and I wanted to capture this idea of something old taking a while to boot up in order to really be a threat. The way I translated this into a card is by having it get stronger with more turns that pass. But in doing so, I needed to find a reference point to have it start getting stronger; I could have just had it get stronger for each turn that passed in the game, but that seemed boring and harder to balance. Instead, I had it get stronger based on the amount of turns that have passed since you last played a copy of this card! In a way it's similar to The Storm Guardian, since it's a 5/5 up front that will get you a 10/10 later. But for this, it loses Taunt and gains the Mech tag and the potential for even more stats! A good play is dropping a large version of this, let's say a 10/10, with Zilliax on turn 10, giving you a big removal AND a lot of healing!

Feedback

There was little to no feedback on this card. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Day 262 | Totemic Warmaster

A 4-Mana card for Shaman

"The totems obey only me."

Creation

I didn't know what to make today, but when I found today's art, I was instantly inspired. In the artwork, the dude in the middle has two totems on his side, both of which have the same energy outline surrounding them that he did. This inspired me to make a card that buffed adjacent Totems! And honestly, there's not much else to say about it than that. Oh, and I guess it's also a 4-Mana 7/7. Wow.

Feedback

There was little to no feedback on this card. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Day 263 | Wizened Mechanic

A 1-Mana card for Warrior

Back in my day, everyone knew a thing or two about spare parts.

Creation

Who else misses Spare Parts? I know I do, and I don't really remember them ever seeing the light of day outside Tinkertown Technician and Clockwork Gnome. Anyways, I think it would be cool to bring them back in some way, and this is my attempt to do so. In a way, this Wizened Mechanic knows how to make use of your Mechs, and whenever they go into battle, he's able to preserve the fallen pieces and turn them into Spare Parts. Then what do you do with the Spare Parts? Well, just play them with your spare mana!

Feedback

There was little to no feedback on this card. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Day 264 | Horned Aggrodon

A 4-Mana card for Hunter

Is it a one-two punch if it's being done with your head?

Creation

Originally, I had an idea for a card but completely rushed the idea and ended up posting a card that I wasn't super in love with. Because of this, I deleted that post and then created this to take its place. This card is similar to Cobra Shot but differs in the sense that it comes with a body, is 1-mana cheaper, but doesn't always give you the maximum benefit.

Feedback

There was little to no feedback on this card. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Sadly, because the amount of work my friends and I are doing for school, many of them are unable to create cards daily and I am unable to follow which ones are being made from them. Because of this, I will no longer be highlighting the cards they are making every week. But either way, I definitely think you should know who I am doing this challenge with: Josh Grazda, Dakota Williams, Joe Siehl, and Wes Weitzman.

And that's all for this week; I'll see you all in 7 days!
