365 Days of Hearthstone | Week 41 Roundup

Same drill as always: post the card, talk about my thought process, and look at any feedback I received from my posts on r/CustomHearthstone. Oh, and if you would like to join in on the fun of this challenge or even just want to draw inspiration from our daily themes as they are happening, hop in our Discord server!

Now without further ado, let's take a look at my cards for this week!

Day 279 | Cultist of Envy

A 6-Mana card for Priest

It's the deadly sin with the most value.

Creation

It's been a while since we've seen a steal-priest focused card as far as I know, or at least one that's really been useful. So I decided to try to design one myself! Cultist of Envy not only generates 2 cards from your opponent, but they're from your opponent's hand, which allows for you to get a look on what cards they could possible play. Additionally, if you suspect the opponent is going to go for a pretty big play soon, you can play this to get their important minions for yourself!

Feedback

The only feedback left on the card was that the rarity seemed off because the effect is a Battlecry and Deathrattle, which is an effect that has typically been given a higher rarity. That being said, Blood Razer is a card with a Battlecry and Deathrattle effect, yet it is a Common card. I think the rarity is only related to the complexity of the effect, and because this is pretty straight forward, I don't see any need to change it from a Common rarity.

Day 280 | Bog Mistweaver

Artwork found by Joe #5

Oh boy, more to add to my fear of spiders!

Creation

The main focal point of this artwork for me is the unidentified body being wrapped up by the spider. To me, the best way to translate this into Hearthstone is through the dormant mechanic, and well, if you've followed my cards for this challenge, you know that I sure do enjoy trying to make dormant happen. Similar to Moat Lurker, this card serves as temporary removal, but this card allows for it to come into play earlier with a slightly healthier body. The only downside is the second that Bog Mistweaver isn't on the board, the minion awakens. This could also be used to try to save your own minions that are in danger!

Feedback

There was little to no feedback on this card. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Day 281 | Jolly Spellseeker

A 7-Mana card for Shaman

When people say "party animal", they're talking about this dude.

Creation

For those of you that don't know, I'm currently a Senior studying Game Design and currently going through my capstone project. Today, me and my team finally decided and presented on a project in front of our class: Frog Bath! I won't go into detail about what the game is (if you're curious, you should definitely check out my blog posts where I'll be trying to make continuous posts about the project), but the important thing is that it's about goofy frogs. So, in honor of us completing this milestone, I wanted to make a frog-based card that's somewhat goofy, especially because today's theme is for Shaman and they love frogs. And what's goofier in Hearthstone than any card that says "targets chosen randomly"? I also tried to make the card synergize with Muckmorpher to help push Big Shaman a bit more; imagine drawing Eureka and spawning some big dude with this card!

Feedback

There was little to no feedback on this card. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Day 282 | Alia, Knifecaster

A 9-Mana card for Rogue

No one has ever beaten her at darts.

Creation

It's hard making a high mana cost card for Rogue since they're so focused on literally Comboing their cards together, especially to trigger Combo effects. Because of this, I thought making a high cost card that interacted with Combo would be fun, especially considering Big Rogue is a thing and that deck might appreciate yet another big threat. Anyways, this card can turn your Eviscerate into a turn dedicated to face damage, allowing you to get some nice burst a turn after playing this. Or, you could try to get more value out of Combo cards like Evil Miscreant!

Feedback

While the idea and theme of the card were sound, it was pointed out that this was too weak in its current state. If I were to remove the downside of the cards costing 1 more mana, it would make things like Eviscerate too consistently powerful, so instead I want to change it to Echo minus- I mean, Twinspell! Now I am aware that a Twinspell card has not been printed for any EVIL classes, but my stance is that because it is a narrative limitation rather than a gameplay limitation, I shouldn't be discouraged from designing Twinspell cards for the EVIL classes. Anyways, this new version gives your Combo cards Twinspell when Alia is played, allowing for the value generated from the card to be solidified upon playing her since she costs so much mana. I would have had the card keep its aura effect, but then there's the issue of the Combo cards generated by Twinspell having Twinspell themselves, and I could not think of a clean way to word a card like that.

Day 283 | Blighted Mystic

Artwork found by Josh #15

"Let me see what your future lacks..."

Creation

As soon as I popped this artwork into the Hearthcards card editor, the portrait was almost perfectly cropped like it is now. Suddenly, I had the idea of basing the card around some sort of negative energy that isn't necessarily evil. At first glance, this effect seems to be a downside, but in a way you can use it to influence what cards you'll be drawing at the every end of the game, which could be useful in a control deck!

Feedback

There was little to no feedback on this card. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Day 284 | Bronze Spectershot

An Epic card for Hunter

One shot, two kills. Or is it one and a half?

Creation

One of my favorite things about Hunter is their Deathrattle package with things like Play Dead and Nine Lives, so I decided to try to make today's card work with that archetype! Bronze Spectershot is essentially a Necrium Blade for Hunter, but in exchange for it being more expensive, it can actually trigger a minion's Deathrattle twice if you use it correctly! And who knows, maybe you could even use it with Mecha'Thun for an OTK!

Feedback

There was little to no feedback on this card. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Day 285 | Blast-Thief... Rafaam?

"If your deck has no duplicates, ..."

"Yeah yeah, 'SUPREME ARCHAEOLOGY' or somethin'!"

Creation

While I was struggling to find a footing for today's theme, I stumbled across this art, and inspiration struck me: what about some Goblin trying to be Rafaam that's messing with Bombs? The similarity to Rafaam is a little bit abstracted, since the singleton mechanics is for the League of Explorers, but I thought that coming up with a singleton card for one of the EVIL classes would be fine, especially with this theme of some goblin stealing Rafaam's identity. But anyways, this mechanics could actually help push some sort of singleton Bomb Warrior... if you wanted to make that deck for some reason. I do think that limiting the amount of Bomb-planting cards in your deck is antithetical to this card in a way, but it can be argued that this card allows you to run Zephrys the Great while making up for the halved amount of Bombs by, well, duplicating them!

Feedback

There was little to no feedback on this card. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Sadly, because the amount of work my friends and I are doing for school, many of them are unable to create cards daily and I am unable to follow which ones are being made from them. Because of this, I will no longer be highlighting the cards they are making every week. But either way, I definitely think you should know who I am doing this challenge with: Josh Grazda, Dakota Williams, Joe Siehl, and Wes Weitzman.

And that's all for this week; I'll see you all in 7 days!
