365 Days of Hearthstone | Week 43 Roundup

Same drill as always: post the card, talk about my thought process, and look at any feedback I received from my posts on r/CustomHearthstone. Oh, and if you would like to join in on the fun of this challenge or even just want to draw inspiration from our daily themes as they are happening, hop in our Discord server!

Now without further ado, let's take a look at my cards for this week!

Day 293 | Serpent Shot

A Rare card for Hunter

Ready... aim.... HISS!

Creation

In our Discord server, someone posted this art of one of the Skylanders characters shooting some sort of snake-gun. I fell in love with this art, and seeing as how today's theme is for Hunter, it became the perfect opportunity to use it for a card! Similar to Marsh Drake, this card has a direct benefit at the cost of giving your opponent a Poisonous minion, but this spell gives more of an immediate impact than Marsh Drake since it kills a minion. Because of this, the Poisonous minion given to your opponent has more health, making it more difficult to get rid of.

Feedback

People really liked this card! The flavor was the star of the show, as the idea of slinging a snake at an enemy minion was pretty funny. In terms of the balance, most people thought that it was spot on, but some people thought it might be better at 3-mana since at this point it would make Deadly Shot obsolete. I do think that this isn't true since the downside is too big to weight the benefit of it being targeted removal as opposed to random. So, I do believe that this card is in the right spot in terms of balance, and most people think so too!

Day 294 | Drakonid Scaleshaper

A card that interacts with Dragons

Who knew Dragons were skilled at genetic engineering...

Creation

The main Dragon synergy in Hearthstone is "If you're holding a Dragon, ...", and instead of making a card with that text, I thought I'd make a card to support those cards! Drakonid Scaleshaper just puts dragons into your hand for later that are just OK when played, but can be held in your hand to fill in any gaps in the game where you don't have any Dragons and need one to trigger an effect like Netherspite Historian!

Feedback

There was little to no feedback on this card. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Day 295 | Purse Cutter

A 3-Mana card for Rogue

Also deals quadruple damage to any minion with the "Rich" tribe.

Creation

I feel like it's been a while since we've gotten any Coin-synergy cards for Rogue in Hearthstone, and I honestly miss them a lot. For today's card, I took the idea of Cutpurse and turned it into a Weapon. Instead of the minion doing the stealing, now it's the actual hero! Originally, I had the card only give you a Coin if you also killed the minion, but in terms of flavor that's not really like you're stealing from them but rather just killing them and taking their belongings. So, having it only require attacking the minion keeps the flavor while still staying on a similar power level.

Feedback

There was little to no feedback on this card. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Day 296 | Nimble Small-Fry

A Common card

Being small just means you're harder to spot.

Creation

Because today's theme is so simple, I thought I'd play into the Common card idea as much as possible: a simple card with an understandable affect that doesn't have many complicated interactions. Nimble Small-Fry is essentially a Twisted Worgen with 1 more health, but with the added downside of not having Stealth initially and the benefit of being able to regain Stealth over and over again. Of course, the card is still just a 2-mana 3/2 with no real benefit other than being able to stay alive for its own sake, so it would probably only ever find a home as a consistent Arena card with no place in Standard. And that's fine! Not every card has to be meta-shaking.

Feedback

There was little to no feedback on this card. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Day 297 | Pain Controller

A 3-Mana card for Warrior

"You... Feel our pain!"

Creation

Warrior has been given some cards that encourage damaging friendly minions, like Battle Rage and Animated Berserker. So, I decided to try to make a card today that gives more of a benefit to damaging your own minions rather than more methods of doing damage. This way, you can squeeze out more value when you're doing something that gets you closer to losing like damaging your own minions!

Feedback

While the idea of the card seemed to land pretty well with the community, it seemed like the card was a tad too strong. With how many ways there are to damage your own minions, I do agree that this needs to be nerfed, and seeing how many players thought that the card shouldn't be able to hit the enemy's face, that's the change I will make!

Day 298 | Elemental Bending

Artwork found by Josh #2

It's like pottery but with lightning!

Creation

Because there's a bunch of stuff going on in the artwork - birds flying, earth being torn up, and what looks like some weird lightning magic - I thought it would be cool to relate this card to Elementals. The idea I had was to support cards like Servant of Kalimos or even Ozruk in the sense that you can play an Elemental you have on board with this card. Originally, the card was 0-mana, but since you could get things like Siamat with very valuable Battlecries, I figured bumping the cost up to 1 would be a good choice.

Feedback

There was little to no feedback on this card. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Day 299 | Divinity Blade

A Common card for Paladin

Unlike batteries, divinity IS included!

Creation

Inspired in part by Blood Razor, I wanted to design a weapon with Battlecry and Deathrattle for today's theme, so originally I had the card give your hero Divine Shield on both a Battlecry and Deathrattle. That being said, that didn't really fit with the idea of a Common card because it seemed too unique. So, I removed the Battlecry and it seemed simple and direct enough to justify the Common rarity!

Feedback

People really enjoyed the simplicity of the card! The effect is unique but immediately understandable, and people thought having it on the weapon in the way that it is was a good idea!

Sadly, because the amount of work my friends and I are doing for school, many of them are unable to create cards daily and I am unable to follow which ones are being made from them. Because of this, I will no longer be highlighting the cards they are making every week. But either way, I definitely think you should know who I am doing this challenge with: Josh Grazda, Dakota Williams, Joe Siehl, and Wes Weitzman.

And that's all for this week; I'll see you all in 7 days!
