365 Days of Hearthstone | Week 45 Roundup

Updated: Nov 17, 2019

Same drill as always: post the card, talk about my thought process, and look at any feedback I received from my posts on r/CustomHearthstone. Oh, and if you would like to join in on the fun of this challenge or even just want to draw inspiration from our daily themes as they are happening, hop in our Discord server!

Now without further ado, let's take a look at my cards for this week!

Day 307 | Call on Dragons

A Common card for Warrior

I've got Deathwing on speed-dial.

Creation

Seeing as how Descent of Dragons was just revealed along with the new Sidequest keyword, I thought I'd make a card out of hype for the new set! Call on Dragons offers Warrior another board clear, but this time they must work towards it with Armor. Once they've reached 10 or 11 Armor, they can then use their Hero Power to trigger the reward when they need to, but this prevents them from gaining Armor since they might use the reward too early.

Feedback

There was little to no feedback on this card. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Day 308 | Totem Scrounger

A card that interacts with Shaman's Hero Power effect

He likes to call himself resourceful.

Creation

ZA_Hearthstone, one of my friends that did this challenge with me towards the beginning of the year, was talking with me earlier today about today's theme since he really liked Totem Shaman. After that talk, I took inspiration from an idea he came up with and created Totem Scrounger, a card that allows for you to play basic Totems you get from your Hero Power later by building them up in your hand! This could potentially synergize with cards like Totem Cruncher, which had the issue of not being able to land on a board full of Totems.

Feedback

There was little to no feedback on this card. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Day 309 | Gunman Gotah

A Legendary card for Hunter

"You can never escape my sights."

Creation

Here's yet another card to get hyped for the new Descent of Dragons expansion. It seems like Hunter is being given a lot of Hero Power synergy, with effects happening based on you using your Hero Power. Gunman Gotah allows you to get more triggers on your Hero Power than normal. The way I would implement the card is that if Gotah's effect triggers, your Hero Power can still be used afterwards - it wouldn't use up the use, only trigger the effect.

Feedback

People liked the idea of the card! The only thing was that people thought it should say "targets chosen randomly" to account for things like Build-A-Beast, but I think because the default Hero Power already has a defined target, it would be confusing for players to read that. I think it's also now a pretty common-place thing for friendly effects that happen on your opponent's turn to be randomly targeted, so because of that I think it's fine to leave it as-is.

Day 310 | Frozen Bones

A card involving Freeze for Shaman

Spend a night with some frozen bones.

Creation

I've already made my fair share of Freeze Shaman cards this year, but regardless I was still excited for today's theme. I thought of making a card with Echo and Freeze, and I figured that making a spell would be too close to something like Ray of Frost or Frost Nova, so I tried making a minion. I wanted the minion to Freeze itself and then synergize with minions that are Frozen in order to have each successive one played get stronger!

Feedback

There was little to no feedback on this card. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Day 311 | Treasure Tracker

Artwork found by Josh #12

People think her keg is full of brew, but it's really just full of maps.

Creation

The fact that the pirate in the artwork reminded me almost immediately of the Discover mechanic, since it was released in the League of Explorer's expansion to embody the feeling of exploring. Treasure Tracker doesn't necessarily Discover, but you do get a choice of three options from which you pick to then draw a card from your deck. If you need to look for a Twig of the World Tree in a Wild Druid deck or maybe you want to draw your Malygos as your only other minion in a combo deck, then, this is your card!

Feedback

There was little to no feedback on this card. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Day 312 | Arcane Insight

A 9-Mana card for Mage

Don't just give a Mage a card; teach them how to draw cards.

Creation

Usually, I tend to make high-cost cards discountable through some effect, such as you would see in something like Molten Giant. For this card, I wanted the Mage to truly feel powerful when playing the card for its cost, meaning that I didn't want the player to be able to play it in a vacuum at a lower cost. Funnily enough, the effect I thought of ends up discounting mana but in a different way! The cards you draw off of this card will slowly discount themselves over time, making this card a strong include in any slower Mage deck that already holds onto cards anyways.

Feedback

The only feedback was that this card seemed to be a bit too slow, and I do agree. By bumping up the card draw to 5 cards, it gives more incentive to run this card

Day 313 | Steaming Medibot

A card that interacts with Mechs

Weird how the burning hot steam doesn't damage the mechs...

Creation

Fun fact: back when Goblins vs Gnomes was announced, I thought Upgraded Repair Bot was going to be super broken. Well, turns out I was super wrong, but I took inspiration from that card for today's theme; I wanted to make something that heals Mechs. Originally, Steaming Medibot was a Priest minion, but because Priest doesn't really have any Mech support right now, it seemed like an awkward fit. I also changed the effect to only activate when this survives damage rather than takes damage so that the opponent has an easier time killing it; I want it to be a good wall, but not frustrating.

Feedback

It was brought up that the card could be too strong since it heals itself. When this is dropped on turn 4, there's very few reasonable responses the opponent could do to answer this. By making it not heal itself, it still retains a small niche without being too overwhelmingly powerful.

Sadly, because the amount of work my friends and I are doing for school, many of them are unable to create cards daily and I am unable to follow which ones are being made from them. Because of this, I will no longer be highlighting the cards they are making every week. But either way, I definitely think you should know who I am doing this challenge with: Josh Grazda, Dakota Williams, Joe Siehl, and Wes Weitzman.

And that's all for this week; I'll see you all in 7 days!
