365 Days of Hearthstone | Week 47 Roundup

Same drill as always: post the card, talk about my thought process, and look at any feedback I received from my posts on r/CustomHearthstone. Oh, and if you would like to join in on the fun of this challenge or even just want to draw inspiration from our daily themes as they are happening, hop in our Discord server!

Now without further ado, let's take a look at my cards for this week!

Day 321 | Crazed Mechahead

A card with one line of text

Mages love going to his parties.

Creation

This challenge was tougher than I thought it would be. Initially, I kept making cards that just said "____ can't ____", which was pretty lame and uninspired. I started to draft up other ideas, but everything I came with up was one word too long to fit the theme. Eventually, I took inspiration from Mayor Noggenfogger and decided to have the effect tied to randomness. By having spells be targeted randomly in general, playing this card makes the game in that moment very minion-focused, since it's really not reliable to play any spell at all!

Feedback

There was little to no feedback on this card. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Day 322 | Shadowbeast

An 8-Mana card for Hunter

And they said shadows can't hurt you.

Creation

I didn't post this card until 10:00PM!!! Oh gosh, that's as close to the wire as I've gotten all year - I was busy all day, and while I designed the card very early on, it completely skipped my mind to post it here. Anyways, Shadowbeast has Rush and gains the Deathrattle of something in your hand, which allows for you to essentially get an instant proc on a good Deathrattle if you slam this into a big minion. But if you don't it still allows you to deal 6 damage instantly!

Feedback

People really liked this card! Many people thought the balance was in the perfect spot, where it would be a strong card in any deck that includes it without it being too frustrating to play against. The only issue this card could cause is if any extremely strong Deathrattles get printed, but because this card costs 8 mana itself, it's not like you'll be cheating the effect out by a lot of mana.

Day 323 | Void Egg

An egg

Angry Chicken + Hagatha the Witch =

Creation

Angry Chicken gains +5 Attack when it is damaged. I think it's pretty obvious what the connection between Void Egg and Angry Chicken are, so I'll just talk about the inspiration for the card. In Stardew Valley, if you have a chicken, there's a chance that a witch will turn one of its eggs into a Void Egg. So that's how I came up with this!

Feedback

There was little to no feedback on this card. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Day 324 | Cybernetic Needlearm

A 6-Mana card for Rogue

Buy one, get as many as you want for a third of the price!

Creation

The original idea for this card was to have a Battlecry that would change your Hero Power to 'Restore 2 Durability to your weapon.' I designed this with the thematic intent of the player equipping a cybernetic arm that then becomes a part of them for the rest of the game, allowing them to repair their weapons in ways they weren't able to before. The issue with this is that it would essentially turn anything into a mini Kingsbane, which seemed too good for my liking. I then pivoted the idea to be that your Cybernetic Needlearm could be repaired completely and replaced with a new one, removing all sorts of potential for buffing your weapon to extreme extents.

Feedback

The design and idea of the card was very well appreciated, but there was a bit of concern about the fact that this is technically infinite. I think the card is strong because of that, but not problematic. The reason why a card like Kingsbane was oppressive was because of how you can keep adding enchantments to it without having too much of a mana investment outside of those buffs. This card, on the other hand, loses all buffs once it is refreshed, making it much less oppressive and much less of a problem in my mind.

Day 325 | Scavenging Raven

A card that does something with an empty hand for Hunter

Wait, but... birds don't have hands...

Creation

When you have an empty hand, the issue is that you can't get more fuel to make more variable and responsive plays since you're only going to get 1 card into your hand in the next turn. Well, Scavenging Raven fixes this issue slightly by giving you an extra card to draw at the start of your turn if your hand is empty! The stats are a little under what is expected, but that's because the ability to draw cards over and over again is very strong so long as you can keep this thing alive. Its stats aren't threatening in any way, so it will be a challenge to do so!

Feedback

There was little to no feedback on this card. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Day 326 | Looming Horseman

A card for The Grand Tournament expansion

"You dare challenge me?!"

Creation

Jousting was an interesting mechanic that was used only slightly, but when Messenger Raven was released, it made a very nice spot in Big Mage. I wanted to make an interesting Joust card, so I made a Joust card that interacts with your opponent rather than giving you a direct upside. Looming Horseman is useful in bigger decks because, well, it's a Joust card, but if it's effect goes off, it essentially forces your opponent to be a big deck for a turn, and if their minions are small, it's a pretty big downside. BUT, if your opponent has minions that cost higher than (6) mana, this could be a problem to play.

Feedback

There was little to no feedback on this card. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Day 327 | Trenatu

A 9-Mana card for Druid

If a tree falls in the woods and no one is around to hear it, Trenatu will be upset.

Creation

Fatespinner has always been one of my favorite card designs of all time, but it's too bad that the card never really got to see any play. The reason being is that both effects can be used by your opponent to get a benefit. I decided to take Fatespinner's concept and make a one-sided card out of it, where both outcomes dictate different responses but they will both benefit you always.

Feedback

There was little to no feedback on this card. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Sadly, because the amount of work my friends and I are doing for school, many of them are unable to create cards daily and I am unable to follow which ones are being made from them. Because of this, I will no longer be highlighting the cards they are making every week. But either way, I definitely think you should know who I am doing this challenge with: Josh Grazda, Dakota Williams, Joe Siehl, and Wes Weitzman.

And that's all for this week; I'll see you all in 7 days!
