365 Days of Hearthstone | Week 50 Roundup

Same drill as always: post the card, talk about my thought process, and look at any feedback I received from my posts on r/CustomHearthstone. Oh, and if you would like to join in on the fun of this challenge or even just want to draw inspiration from our daily themes as they are happening, hop in our Discord server!

Now without further ado, let's take a look at my cards for this week!

Day 342 | Sabatooze

A card that temporarily alters your Hero Power

Flavor text is hard for something that tastes so bad.

Creation

I saw someone in the Discord make a card that made your next Hero Power do something different, and so I thought it might be cool to have a card that made your opponent's next Hero Power change. Originally, I had their Hero Power change to literally do nothing, but I thought I could make it more interesting. By equipping a 0/1 Weapon, this card essentially disables their Hero Power and puts any Weapon-using class in an awkward position. Additionally, if you're up against something like a Mage or a Druid, they can't just ping this minion and need to spend 2 mana to equip the Slimehand that does nothing for them.

Feedback

This card did amazingly well! It got a lot of attention, and a lot of people loved the duality of how it interrupts your opponent. While many people applauded the design, it was pretty commonly thought that the card is a bit too strong. Being able to play this on turn 1 with vanilla stats might be too swingy against certain classes. By bumping this card up to 2-mana, it can still be played in the early game while not being able to be squeezed into turns easily. To compensate for this, bumping its health up to 2 allows for it to be decent stats rather than weak stats!

Day 343 | Palerose Bouquet

A Weapon for a class without Weapons

Just hope none of your minions are allergic to flowers.

Creation

Priest heals. That's a pretty well-understood thing. And seeing as how giving Priest a Weapon that can deal damage didn't seem to be thematically on-point, I knew I had to make a Weapon with an aura-like effect. This card incentivizes the use of Healing by just doubling it. Originally, I had this card seriously overvalued, where it costed 3 Mana but only increased your healing by 1. This iteration is a lot stronger and could actually see play in some decks that think they need the extra healing!

Feedback

There was little to no feedback on this card. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Day 344 | Wildlands Defender

A card for the Battlegrounds mode

Seems to be the only person in Azeroth to care about biodiversity.

Creation

Taking inspiration from Lightfang Enforcer, I wanted to make a menagerie card that's, well, not as broken. This card has a self-benefit when you control a bunch of different minion types where it becomes Immune during battle. To clarify, if you have a Nightmare Amalgam in play, it won't count as every single tribe and will only count as one, similarly to when you play Menagerie Magician and it only receives one buff. If you can find a way to buff this card, it becomes even stronger!

Feedback

There was little to no feedback on this card. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Day 345 | Storm Emergence

A card with a Mana-reducing effect that isn't for Rogue or Druid

I guess this is an 'Underload' card?

Creation

My original idea for today's theme was to essentially translate your Overloaded Mana Crystals into a Cost-reduction effect, but that seemed too wordy and not really interesting enough. I then had the idea of turning it into a Sidequest, where you pay for the Cost-reduction effect ahead of time through Overload effects! I'm also aware that the EVIL classes don't get Sidequests, but I think that a narratively-locked mechanic is, for lack of a better word, limiting on design. The "good" classes aren't defined by their access to Sidequests, so I think it's fine to design one for Shaman.

Feedback

There was little to no feedback on this card. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Day 346 | Glimry R. Goldtooth

An 8-Mana card for Rogue

"Ah, jus' let 'em eat cake."

Creation

Today is my Cake Day! Because of this, and because today's theme is for the Rogue class, I thought of making a card related to the "Let them eat cake" phrase, which is essentially a phrase that shows a misunderstanding of the poor. Because of this, I wanted to make a fancy-pants rich Legendary minion related to Coins, and so I made Glimry R. Goldtooth! Originally he had no Battlecry effect, but that didn't have enough impact to really be worth playing. With the Battlecry that summons the Rush minions, not only do you get 4 immediate damage, but you also get 2 Coins so long as they die!

Feedback

There was little to no feedback on this card. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Day 347 | Vindicated Veteran

A 'Paladin' Paladin card

"You don't know the light like I do!"

Creation

'Paladin' Paladin is a new archetype introduced in Descent of Dragons with the addition of two cards: Lightforged Crusader and Lightforged Zealot. These cards give you insane amounts of value with the prerequisite of only running Paladin cards in your deck. The card I made follows this rule and gives you a grand total of 10/11 stats for only 5 Mana. The downside is, of course, only running Paladin cards, but also the buffing effect is attached to a Deathrattle that only hits adjacent minions. There are ways for the enemy to play around this card, but when it goes off you can get a ton of value from it!

Feedback

There was little to no feedback on this card. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Day 348 | Golden Facade

Artwork found by Leo #1

Golden Face? Set the threat level to midnight.

Creation

It seemed pretty obvious to make a card for today's theme around something Golden, so I did! Golden cards are strange since they don't really add anything to gameplay and are purely aesthetic. It isn't fair to the players to make cards that act upon a Golden card since that's just punishing people that are investing more dust into the game. Because of this, any effect involving a Golden card has to be the same if the word "Golden" was removed, since it's just an aesthetic thing. Golden Facade is another addition to Rogue's pretty small repertoire of Secrets in which you can copy an enemy minion for only 2-Mana so long as they die on the enemy's turn. Your opponent has control over which minion will be given, so they could honestly spawn a Lackey and kill it off to prevent any real value gain from this.

Feedback

There was little to no feedback on this card. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Sadly, because the amount of work my friends and I are doing for school, many of them are unable to create cards daily and I am unable to follow which ones are being made from them. Because of this, I will no longer be highlighting the cards they are making every week. But either way, I definitely think you should know who I am doing this challenge with: Josh Grazda, Dakota Williams, Joe Siehl, and Wes Weitzman.

And that's all for this week; I'll see you all in 7 days!
